Trichiasis means one or two eyelashes misdirected toward inward and rub on Cornea is called as Trichiasis.
What is trichiasis ?

What is trichiasis ? 

• It is anomalies of position eyelashes. 
• The inward misdirected of cilia with normal position of lid margin. 
• The inward turning of lashes along with the lid margin is called as pseudotrichiasis.

What is Causes of trichiasis ? 


• Trachoma 
• Bephritis 
• Healed membranous conunctivitis 
• Hordeolum externum 
• Mechanical Injury 
• Burn 
• Operative scar on ld margin

What is Symptoms of trichiasis ? 


• FB Sensation 
• Photophobia 
• Irritation 
• Pain 
• Lacrimation


What is Sign of trichiasis ? 


• Misdirected cilia touching the cornea. 
• Blepharospasm 
• Photohobia occur when cornea is abraded 
• Conjunctiva may be congested

Complication of Trichiasis 


• Recurrent corneal abrasion 
• Superficial corneal opacity 
• Corneal vascularisation 
• Non healing corneal ulcer 

Treatment of Trichiasis 


• Epilation 
• Electrolysis 
• Cryoepilation 
• Surgical correction

Epilation 


•Mechanical removal with forceps 
• Its is temporary method as recurrent occurs within 3-4 weeks.


Electrolysis 


• It is method of eyelashes follicle by electric current. 
• In electrolysis infiltration anesthesia is given to the lid 
• 2 mA current is passed for 10 second through a fine needle inserted in to the eyelashes root. 
• Loosened cilia then remove with epilation forceps

Cryoepilation 


• It is effective method for treating trichiasis. 
• In electrolysis infiltration anesthesia is require 
• The cryoprobe with -20 degree applied for 20-25 second to external lid margin. • Its main disadvantages is depigmentaion of the skin.


Surgical correction for Trichiasis 


• When many cilia are misdirected operative treatment similar to entropin is performed
